01Instruments and secure links

EIDEL

Builds the instruments and data systems that fly, and the secure links that connect them.

EIDEL is an engineering company in electronics, software and system design for space and defence. In space, the company studies, designs and delivers scientific instruments and data handling systems, both flight hardware and ground support equipment. Its space-grade products include sensors for space weather monitoring, data acquisition and telemetry systems, and satellite link encryption.

In defence, EIDEL supplies control and management equipment for communication systems, secure communication and telemetry for test and training. The company was known as Eidsvoll Electronics until 2023, when it took the name EIDEL, its trademark since the 1960s.

03Sensing radiation

IDEAS

Makes the chips that let instruments detect and measure radiation in space.

IDEAS (Integrated Detector Electronics AS) designs integrated circuits, radiation detectors and imaging systems. The company was founded in 1992 as a spin-off from Norwegian high-energy physics at CERN, and works as a fabless supplier of readout circuits and subsystems for radiation detection and imaging.

IDEAS circuits are used in space, medical imaging, industrial inspection, nuclear science and astrophysics. The company developed NORM, the Norwegian Radiation Monitor, which was launched in August 2024 on Space Norway’s ASBM-2 satellite. Its data is now openly available through the EU Agency for the Space Programme.

05Access to space

Andøya Space

Gives Europe launch access from Norwegian soil, at 69° north.

Andøya Space has launched rockets from Andøya since 18 August 1962, more than 1,200 in total, and operates sub-orbital launch sites on Andøya and Svalbard. At 69° north, its spaceport provides launch facilities and services for small satellites to polar and sun-synchronous orbits. Isar Aerospace made the first orbital launch attempt from continental Europe there in March 2025.

The company also offers testing of weapon and sensor systems, full-scale military training, drone services, scientific ground instruments and space education. Andøya Space is owned by the Ministry of Industry, Commerce and Fisheries (90 %) and Kongsberg Defence & Aerospace (10 %).

07Infrastructure in orbit

Space Norway

Owns and operates the satellites that connect users from the Arctic to North Africa.

Space Norway is a satellite operator owned by the Ministry of Industry, Commerce and Fisheries. It operates the THOR satellites in geostationary orbit, serving Europe, the Middle East and North Africa, and has ordered THOR 8 from Thales Alenia Space.

Through the Arctic Satellite Broadband Mission, two satellites in highly elliptical orbit have provided broadband north of 65° since 2024, for civil, government and military users. The satellites also carry a hosted payload for the US Space Force. Space Norway owns 50 % of KSAT, together with Kongsberg Defence & Aerospace.
