About

Tonje Nanette Arnesen is the Research Manager for space activities in the Sensor and Surveillance Systems Department at the Norwegian Defence Research Establishment (FFI). She works on research and on shaping Norway’s research and development efforts in the space domain, with a particular focus on satellite payloads, sensor technology, automatic target detection, and data fusion for defence and security applications. Arnesen holds an MSc in Engineering Physics from the Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU) in Trondheim (2002). She also earned a Master of Space Studies from the International Space University in Strasbourg (2003). Throughout her career at FFI (since 2004), Arnesen has gained experience in signal processing, image analysis, maritime surveillance, and the development of instruments for microsatellites. She has completed two international research assignments: one at Defence Research and Development Canada (DRDC) in Ottawa, Canada, in 2007, and another at the Space and Naval Warfare Systems Command (SPAWAR), now the Naval Information Warfare Center (NIWC), in San Diego, United States, in 2016. She has contributed to the development of Norwegian capabilities in space-based surveillance and defence-related sensor technology, supporting Norway’s efforts to develop sovereign space capabilities for national defence, maritime surveillance, and strategic autonomy in the High North and globally.
